Defeat

On Thursday, September 7, the Hafod men agreed to return to work “at the reduced rate of wages originally proposed by their employers, Messrs. Vivian, after a strike which has lasted for five weeks.”167 The resumption of work at Hafod, one of the Swansea District’s largest works, triggered capitulation elsewhere, as The Cambrian reported:

Since writing the foregoing, we have learned, that the men belonging to the Forest Copper Works returned to their work last evening, at the reduced wages. We find also, that most of the Middle Bank coppermen have applied to be received back, and that Messrs. Grenfells have now as many men as they require for carrying on their works. The Upper Bank Copper Works are still idle, and we understand that Messrs. Grenfell are not anxious to light these works. We hope in our next to be able to announce that the men in the employment of Messrs. Williams, Foster, and Co., Freeman and Co., and the Mines Royal Co., have likewise resumed working, and that the whole district may again be in operation.168
